A Brief History of the Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are a pro football team with the National Football League based in Seattle, Washington. Their franchise was formed in 1976 as an expansion team for the NFL on the west coast. The Seattle Seahawks are currently a part of the National Football Conference, having previously been members of the American Football Conference. The Seahawks are based out of Seattle, Washington and play at Qwest Field (previously CenturyLink Field), a stadium located near downtown Seattle. The Seahawks share Qwest Field with the Seattle Sounders FC, Seattle’s professional soccer team. The Seattle Seahawks are Washington State’s only professional football team.

The Seattle Seahawks were formed as a sports franchise in 1976 as a testament to Seattle’s growing population and ability to support a professional football team. The Seahawks are named after the osprey, a bird of prey native to the Northwestern United States. Their team logo is a stylized bird’s head drawn in the traditional style of the Northwestern Native American tribes, seen on totem poles in the region. Their team colors are navy blue, green, and white. From their founding, the Seattle Seahawks played at the Kingdome in southern Seattle until the stadium’s demolition in 2000. After the stadium’s removal, the Seahawks move to the downtown stadium, Qwest Field. The Seahawk’s headquarters are located in Kirkland, with their training held in Renton, along the shore of Lake Washington. The Seattle Seahawks are the only team in NFL history to switch football conferences twice, originally switching to the AFC after one year and then later rejoining the NFC in 2002.

The Seattle Seahawks have had a mix of strong and weak seasons. The Seahawks have won seven division titles over their 35-year history, in 1988 and 1999 with the AFC, and in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010 with the NFC. The Seahawks have played in one Super Bowl, in 2005 against the Pittsburg Steelers, which they lost. The Seahawks hold the record for the longest time spent without a playoff victory, from 1984 until beating the Washington Redskins 20-10 in 2005. The Seattle Seahawks also hold the record for the only team in the NFL to win their division with a losing record in 2010, beating the New Orleans Saints, then the current Super Bowl champions. Seattle is also famous for its committed fan base. Using the phrase “12th man” to refer to its dedicated fans, the Seahawks have retired jersey #12 for sale to fans. This became an issue in 2006 when the team was sued by Texas A&M University for the copyright infringement of the term “12th man.” The case was settled out of court with Texas granting Seattle continued use of the phrase.

2005 was one of the Seattle Seahawks’ strongest years. Starting with their winning playoff game against the Washington Redskins, the Seahawks went on to play a 13-3 season, which included an eleven game winning streak. This earned Seattle its first trip to the Super Bowl against the Pittsburg Steelers. Although the Seahawks put forward a good effort, they ultimately lost the Super Bowl to the Steelers 21-10. The referees decisions in the game have since been debated with some believing the Seahawks were unduly penalized by the bad officiating. The heaviest criticism was against the invalidations of two deep passes in the first and fourth quarters, which, if decided differently, would have changed the outcome of the game.
