
| Oakland Raiders The Oakland Raiders are a National Football League team that plays their home games in the O.co Coliseum. The Raiders are known for their eccentric fans and owner, Al Davis. The fans are known to paint their face and wear costumes to every game. The Oakland Raiders have been in the NFL for over 40 years and have become one of the most popular teams in the league despite not having any recent success. The Oakland Raiders first year in professional football was as a member of the American Football League in 1960. The Raiders did not experience success in the league until the hiring of Al Davis as the head coach and general manager. Al Davis changed the coaching strategy and improved the team throughout his tenure. Davis would leave the team in 1967, but would come back a few months later as an owner of the team. With the foundation set by Davis, the Raiders would make the playoffs for the first time in 1967. The 1967 season would end with the Raiders losing in Super Bowl II to the Green Bay Packers. The Oakland Raiders would join the NFL, along with the entire AFL, for the start of the 1970 season. The Oakland Raiders be one of the most dominant teams in the NFL during the 1970s and 1980s. The mid 1970s would see the Raiders make the playoffs 4 out of 5 season, but they would fail to advance in the playoffs each season. The Raiders would make the playoffs once again in 1976. This time the Raiders advanced through the playoffs until they ultimately beat the Minnesota Vikings for their first Super Bowl victory. The Raiders would have a few poor seasons until they made the playoffs again in 1980. After making the playoffs in the 1980 season, the Raiders would face the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Oakland came in to the game as a major underdog, but they would upset the Eagles for their second Super Bowl victory in 5 years. The Raiders would miss the playoffs the season following their Super Bowl victory, and would move to Los Angeles the following season. The Raiders would make the playoffs in their first four seasons while in Los Angeles. They would be eliminated in the playoffs in 3 of the 4 seasons, but would make another appearance in the Super Bowl in 1983. The Raiders would play the Seattle Seahawks in the 1983 Super Bowl and would win the game very easily. After the 1985 season, the Raiders would start to struggle and would not make the playoffs for 5 seasons. This struggle lead to talk of moving the team back to Oakland. The move to Oakland would fall through but the Raiders would make the playoffs in the 1990, 1991 and 1993 seasons. The Raiders would eventually move back to Oakland starting in the 1995 season, but would struggle for several season. The Oakland Raiders struggles continued until 2000 when the team made the playoffs for the first time in 7 seasons. The Raiders would make the playoffs the next 2 season and would ride the success to another Super Bowl appearance in 2002. This time the Raiders would fail to win and would ultimately lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their former head coach Jon Gruden. The Raiders have failed to make the playoffs since their Super Bowl defeat, but appear to be slowing turning their team into a contender. |
