The History of the New York Jets NFL Franchise

The New York Jets are an American Football team in the American Football Conference (AFC) and are a part of the Eastern Division. The Jets are headquartered in Florham Park, New Jersey, but the team represents the New York metropolitan area. The Jets, in a unique scenario uncommon in the NFL, share the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with the New York Giants, a team that plays in the National Football Conference.

The New York Jets were founded in 1959, then called the Titans of New York, and were one of the original members of the American Football League. The football franchise later joined the NFL when the AFL and the NFL conferences merged in 1970. The team began their first season in 1960, playing at the Polo Grounds. The team came under new ownership in 1963, the same time when the "Jets" name was adopted, and the franchise was relocated to Shea Stadium in 1964. The team played at Shea for twenty years before moving to the Meadowlands Sports Complex in 1984. The Jets advanced to the playoffs for the first time in 1968 and made it to Super Bowl III where they played the Baltimore Colts. A heavy underdog, the Jets ostentatious quarterback, Joe Namath, guaranteed a Super Bowl victory. Namath and the Jets prevailed and became the first AFL club to defeat an NFL franchise in an AFL versus NFL World Championship Game.

Since 1968, the New York Jets have appeared in the playoffs thirteen times, and in the AFC Championship Game four times, most recently losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the match to see what team would represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Though the organization struggled for most of the 1970's, the Jets made the playoffs several times in the 1980's and early 1990's before falling off for several years. It was not until the late 1990's that the Jets, under famous coach Bill Parcells, became relevant once again and made it to the AFC championship game in 1998. The Jets have experienced a bit of a renaissance as of late under brash, but brilliant coach Rex Ryan, making it to the AFC Championship Game the last two years. Unfortunately for the New York Jets, they have not been able to conquer the championship game obstacle, having lost in every appearance. Super Bowl III in 1968 remains the only Super Bowl the organization has ever played.

The team headquarters and training facility, named the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, opened in 2008 and is located in Florham Park. The team currently holds their annual training camp sessions, which is open to the general public, on the campus of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland, located in Cortland, New York. The franchise will occasionally hold training camp practice sessions at the Florham Park complex, which is also open to the general public.

The most famous New York Jets player is far and away Joe Namath, the starting quarterback during their Super Bowl III win. He is a Hall of Fame Quarterback and a part of the New York Jets Ring of Honor. Other Ring of Honor inductees include Wide Receiver Don Maynard, who is also a Hall of Fame honoree, Defensive Lineman Joe Klecko, Offensive Lineman Winston Hill and Running Back Curtis Martin.
