| New York Giants The New York Giants are the oldest team in the NFL. They were one of only five teams to enter the NFL in 1925 and they’re the only team of that bunch remaining. They played in the Eastern Division from 1933 to 1949, the American Conference from 1950 to 1952 and the Eastern Conference from 1953 to 1969. They didn’t enter the current NFL until 1970. Since that time, they have had a successful run. They have three Super Bowl titles and four Super Bowl appearances. The four Super Bowl titles for the Giants came in 1986, 1990 and 2007. In 1986, they defeated the Denver Broncos by a score of 39-20. Phil Sims was 22 for 25, which comes out to an 88% completion percentage. Even the great John Elway couldn’t compete with this type of performance. Other key players in the game were Mark Bavaro, Joe Morris, Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson. Phil Sims and Lawrence Taylor are now the two most recognizable names in Giants history. Phil Sims was drafted in 1979 and Lawrence Taylor was drafted in 1981. In Lawrence Taylor’s first season, he won Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. In 1990, the Giants set a record for the fewest turnover in a season 14. They also sported a 13-3 record. The dilemma was that Phil Sims got injured. Jeff Hostetler filled in and was playing exceptionally well. Head Coach Bill Parcells had to make a decision for the playoffs. Should he go with Super Bowl champion and steady performer Phil Sims or stick with the less talented yet hot QB in Jeff Hostetler? He chose the latter. This game ended up coming down to the final kick, which was a 41-yard field goal attempt by Scott Norwood of the Bills. All the Giants held hands on the sidelines and prayed for a miss. Their prayers were answered as the kick sailed wide right. There were a couple of key plays in this game. One was Otis Anderson winding up and giving a defender an uppercut as he pounded his way for more yards. The other was a near impossible 3rd and 11 where Mark Ingram twisted, turned and stiff-armed his way for a 1st down. If that 1st down isn’t made, the Giants probably lose the game. Bill Parcells resigned after the magical 1990 season and all the magic was lost. It took a decade for the Giants to return to the Super Bowl in the year 2000. They were up against the Baltimore Ravens, who sported one of the scariest defenses in NFL history. It was scary on that day as well. They intercepted Giants QB Kerry Collins four times on their way to a 34-7 victory. This was the first Super Bowl loss for the Giants organization. In 2007, the Giants made the Super Bowl once again. This time, they were up against a much different type of opponent. They were up against the high-powered offense of the New England Patriots. With Tom Brady at QB and Bell Belicheck as Head Coach, the Patriots were undefeated that season. It took a last drive miracle by Eli Manning, David Tyree and Plaxico Burress for the Giants to steal the game in the final seconds. The Giants went 12-4 and made the playoffs the following season, but lost to the division-rival Eagles in the divisional playoff game. The New York Giants play in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. This is consistently the most competitive division in football. |
