Philadelphia Eagles History

In 1931 the Frankford Yellow Jackets of the National Football League went bankrupt half way through the season. With a team missing from their league, the NFL searched for interested people that would like to own a team. Over a year later, Burt Bell and Lud Wray purchased a team and called them the Philadelphia Eagles. They would play their first game in the 1933 season. The Eagles would struggle in their early years, but owner Burt Bell would come up with a revolutionary idea that would help them in the future.

Bell proposed that the NFL start a draft to balance out the power of the teams in the league. The picks would go in inverse order of the standings, with the worst team getting the first pick. The draft still runs the same today as it did in the 1930's. The Eagles would end up getting the first pick in the 1938 and 1939 drafts after finishing with the worst record in the NFL. Lud Wray's ownership portion of the Philadelphia Eagles was purchased by Art Rooney in 1940. Rooney and Bell would then swap ownership with Alexis Thompson, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thompson became the new owner of the Eagles, and all of the players from Pittsburgh would now played for the Eagles. Thompson immediately hired Greasy Neale to become the head coach, and this decision would finally allow the Eagles to become a winning franchise.

1944 was the first season that ended with the Philadelphia Eagles having a winning record. The following two seasons the Eagles would fall one win short of playing for the NFL Championship. The Eagles would play for their first championship the next season, but would ultimately lose to the Chicago Cardinals. They would win their first of three NFL Championships in 1948 when they faced the Chicago Cardinals for the second straight season. The Philadelphia Eagles would win their second consecutive NFL Championship in 1949 when they shutout the Los Angeles Rams 14-0. This would be the greatest era in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles, and they have yet to come close to achieving the same success since.

The entire 1950's were a struggle for the Eagles. After coming of of three straight NFL Championship appearances, the Eagles began a steady decline in the standings. Neale would quit his head coaching position after the 1950 season, and the Eagles would not settle on a quality coach until the hiring of Buck Shaw in 1958. Shaw steadily improved the Eagles, and would lead them to their first playoff appearance in 11 years. The Eagles won their third championship in 1960 when they beat the Green Bay Packers. This success would only last a few years until the Eagles started on another downward spiral.

Philadelphia would not make the playoffs from 1961-1977, which was the worst the team had perform since the team's establishment. Dick Vermeil would become the head coach in 1976 and lead the team to playoff appearances and their first Super Bowl, which they lost to the Oakland Raiders.

Jeffery Lurie would purchase the Eagles in 1994 and lead them to some of their most successful seasons in their history. The Eagles has made the playoffs 11 out of the 16 years, and lost their second Super Bowl in 2005. The Eagles continue to be one of the best teams in the NFL, and are the most storied team without a Super Bowl title.
