| Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a team in the National Football League that play their home game in the southwest portion of Florida. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently play their home games in Raymond James Stadium. While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have one of the shortest histories of any team in the NFL, they have achieved both great success and failure in their time in the league. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would join the NFL for the 1976 season as an expansion team. The Seattle Seahawks would also join the league the same season to keep the league with an even amount of teams. Prior to joining the NFL, the fans in the Tampa Bay area were allowed to vote on what they wanted the name to the team to be. The fans ultimately choose the Buccaneers, which alludes to the pirate myths in southern Florida. While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would not achieve success in the beginning, they would do something that would change the NFL forever. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would lose all 14 of their games in the first season. This would make them the first team in the history of the NFL to finish a season without a win. This record would stay in place until the 2008 season when the Detroit Lions would lose all 16 of their games that season. Both teams remain the only two teams in the NFL to finish a season winless. During this time, Tampa Bay would become the first team to wear white jerseys while playing at home. The temperatures during the beginning of the NFL season are still very hot in Tampa, so they decided to wear white for a home field advantage. In the years following, other teams in the NFL would start wearing white jerseys while playing at home. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would not win their first game until the 13th week of the 1977 season. This means that the franchise lost their first 26 games that they ever played. This lead to Tampa Bay being constantly mocked by people on television. Despite the slow start, the Buccaneers would be winning in no time. The Buccaneers would make the playoffs for the first time in the 1979 season when they finished the season with 10 wins. The Buccaneers would win in the first round of the playoffs, but would lose to the Rams in the NFC Championship game. Tampa Bay would once again make the playoffs in the 1981 and 1982 seasons, but would go into a drastic drought in the years following. Between the years of 1983 and 1995 the Buccaneers would go back to their losing ways. They would not make the playoffs once during the 12 years, and would finish every season with a losing record. The 12 straight seasons of maintaining a losing record was an NFL record for such a streak. Most of the losing can be attributed to the team being poorly run. The late 1990's and the years to follow would be much kinder to the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers would move to Raymond James Stadium in 1998 and would make the playoffs 6 out of the next 9 seasons with one Super Bowl victory. After making the playoffs for 4 straight seasons, the Buccaneers would defeat the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl in 2002. The Buccaneers struggled following the Super Bowl victory and have not made the playoffs since. Tampa Bay is currently coming off a 10 win season and are one of the best young teams in the league. |
