Denver Broncos Tickets For Sale

Denver Broncos

As one of the first AFL teams, the Denver Broncos were created in 1959 and played their first game in 1960. After winning a handful of their early games, the team saw only slow improvement and by the end of the 1960s they were sitting on a losing record.

In 1973, the Broncos' first winning season, the team won seven games with only five losses and two ties. This meant that fans were more willing to pay to see them, but on the field the team continued to struggle. They didn't see the postseason until 1977 and were still considered one of the league's minor upstarts.

Denver's First Super Bowl and the Orange Crush

One thing the Broncos did have going for them during the 1970s was their defense. Nicknamed Orange Crush, the Broncos' defense featured a young Lyle Alzado, and by 1977 was among the best in the NFL.

The 1977 season was not only the first time the Broncos made the playoffs but ended with their first appearance in a Super Bowl. Led by veteran quarterback Craig Morton, the Broncos made a valiant effort but couldn't maintain their lead and went on to lose by a score of 27-10.

The Elway Years

In 1982, the Broncos acquired Stanford All-American quarterback, John Elway, who had just declined to play for the Baltimore Colts and was contemplating a career as a professional baseball player. In his first year at Denver, Elway's 259 pass attempts with 123 completions gave Denver fans the belief that a new era had begun.

By 1986, with the Broncos poised to return to the Super Bowl, John Elway hit his stride. In that year's AFC title game against the Cleveland Browns, Elway led his team 98 yards on a fourth quarter drive to tie the game and send it into overtime. A field goal by Rich Karlis secured the Broncos' victory.

After losing Super Bowl XXI to the New York Giants, the Broncos would return to the Super Bowl the following season, only to lose to the Washington Redskins by a score of 42-10. Two years later, Super Bowl XXIV saw the Broncos back in the big game, but their third Super Bowl appearance in four years resulted in yet another loss.

Near the end of a disappointing decade, the Broncos entered Super Bowl XXXII determined to win the big one. After defeating the Green Bay Packers 31-24, they came back the following year and beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-19 in Super Bowl XXXIII. John Elway was named Super Bowl MVP.

John Elway's record of five Super Bowl appearances, including two victories, has secured his position as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Since Elway's departure at the end of the 1998 season, the Broncos have had difficulty finding a comparable replacement and have won only one postseason game.

After moving into the new Invesco Field at Mile High in 2001, the Broncos are now led by Tim Tebow from the University of Florida. Tebow apparently has a big fan in John Elway, and Denver fans are hoping Tebow can fill Elway's shoes.
